Alejo de Vajía
St. Simon
Circa 1486-98
Chapter house, Cathedral of St. Savior
Oviedo, Spain
Portraits of St. Simon often have a book, though usually it is closed. The instrument of his martyrdom is almost always pictured as a two-handed bucksaw. A sword, though not unprecedented, is very rare, and I have not yet seen any other image of the saint with a serrated sword like this one.
